It’s One Thing to Have a Dream, It’s Another to Own a Dream!!!

We met up with Zainab Attari from Chimerical Creativity and gained some delightful insights on her favourite project; Making exotic Dream Catchers. Here are some excerpts from our conversations.

Let’s talk about the significance of Dreamcatchers.

In Native American culture, a dreamcatcher, the inanimate form of the word for “spider” meaning “dream snare”  is a handmade object based on a willow hoop, on which is woven a web. The dream catcher is then decorated with personal and sacred items such as feathers and beads.

The Ojibwa people believe that a dreamcatcher changes a person’s dreams. According to Konrad J. Kaweczynski, “Only good dreams would be allowed to filter through… Bad dreams would stay in the net, disappearing with the light of day.” Good dreams would pass through and slide down the feathers to the sleeper. Another explanation of Lakota origin, “Nightmares pass through the holes and out of the window. The good dreams are trapped in the web, and then slide down the feathers to the sleeping person.”

Personally, dreamcatchers are a reminder of positivity & hope for me. The things that happen are destined to happen and you cannot change it however hard you try but you can try to stay positive even in hardest of times. Dream catchers are a symbol of mothers, who sit by your bedside and tell you, it’s all okay when you wake up from a nightmare. That positive assurance helps you sleep through rest of night. Similarly, the dream catcher is believed to take away those bad dreams by assuring you every night before you sleep that “it’s all going to be okay”

Can dreamcatchers be used in forms other than Bed Stand accessories?

Dream catchers are ideally meant for rooms on your bedside but you can have them anywhere. They are a frequent reminder for positivity and these days also a very trending fashion statement. So you can add them to your neck as a pendant, earrings for your ears, accessory for your car, arm or wrist bracelets for your hands, to your head as a head gear at the back, anklet to your feet, keychain for your keys or just a dangler on your bags. You can also hang them at your work place or anywhere in your house! It’s more about the positive energy than just being a “catcher” 😉

What inspired you to take this project up?

Creativity has been my forte and I have always wished to grow in that aspect. I am also a person who loves to bring a smile on someone’s face by the smallest deed. My business of weaving dream catchers helps me achieve both of these simultaneously. In a world filled with so much of troubles in everyone’s life, my work of art gives them a positive hope for a better tomorrow. We all need something or someone to make us feel positive each day and face all the challenges thrown at us. With my dream catchers I can help them mentally. It gives me happiness and self-satisfaction when I have achieved in making someone somewhere feel positive or helped them inspire to do well for others or simply mesmerize them with art.

Why the name Chimerical Creativity?

The word Chimerical means a lot of things such as conceptual, fanciful, fantastic, unreal, visionary, dreamlike, illusive, illusory, visionary, wildly fanciful or imaginary. With context to my work I would narrow it down to meanings such as these, fantastic, fanciful, dreamlike or imaginary. Whereas, creativity is because I do not copy anything from the net, it’s my creative ideas which craft each dream catcher in numerous styles, colours and sizes. Even when the client wants it exactly like some web picture, I add my own special touch. So what I create is a product of my imagination, you can see it and feel it but you can only sense the positive vibes if you have a fantastic imagination of the unseen power of the universe.
